The Princess and Curdie

Read Chapters 1-16

As you read, consider the following questions for discussion:

  1. As a coming of age allegory, what elements of growing up does Curdie encounter in these chapters? For example, he becomes immersed in work in a more adult way, etc. Include both positive and negative elements.
  2. George McDonald was a strong influence on both Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. As you read, note the points of influence you see. Discuss your thoughts.
  3. Curdie is an archetype of the knight going through the process of becoming chivalrous. Consider the 5 points of chivalry you learned in Sir Gawain and apply as many as you can to Curdie as he matures throughout the book.
  4. Consider Lina. What do you believe she represents in this story?
